Did you know that more than 5 million children under age 18 live with asthma? With widespread community transmission of COVID-19 and this year’s potential influenza (flu) activity, people with chronic respiratory conditions like asthma are at increased risk for severe illness. It is important that healthcare providers and clinicians follow guidelines-based practices that address environmental triggers and integrate intervention strategies.
The cornerstone of NEEF’s purpose lies in the intersection of education, conservation, and health—all gateways for increasing people’s understanding of how the environment impacts their lives. Because many asthma triggers are tied to a person’s environment—where they live, work, and play—NEEF has developed the Pediatric Asthma Initiative, aimed at integrating environmental management of asthma into pediatric healthcare.
For over 15 years, NEEF has partnered with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to improve health outcomes for children with asthma. We provide many resources to help keep children with asthma healthy—most notably our free Pediatric Asthma Management online certification course.
Environmental Management of Pediatric Asthma: Guidelines for Healthcare Providers
This 90-minute eLearning program integrates case studies, guided exercise, and open dialogue into its curriculum. The program aims to develop the skills healthcare providers need to identify environmental triggers, counsel patients and families, and implement evidence-based environmental interventions to improve health outcomes for children with asthma.
What will participants learn in the course? The ten modules cover asthma prevalence, demographics, and environmental factors; how asthma is affected by environmental triggers; researched-based interventions; NEEF’s environmental history form; indoor and outdoor allergens and irritants; and more.
After completing the course, participants will be able to:
- Describe the top six Guidelines Implementation Panel messages.
- Restate the underlying Expert Panel Report (EPR 3) recommended clinical activities for the diagnosis and management of asthma.
- Explain how to apply strategies of the CDC EXHALE Technical Package to improve asthma management.
- Demonstrate proper use of NEEF’s Environmental History Form to assess a patient’s environmental exposures.
- Describe multicomponent best practice mitigation interventions for children with identified indoor allergens and a history of environmental triggers to eliminate exposure and create healthy indoor environments.
- Discuss strategies on how healthcare providers, community members, and school officials can collaborate to manage asthma successfully.
